Too Many of Baltimore's Babies Die While Sleeping

Earlier this year, we shared the devastating news that six babies in Baltimore City died in six weeks while sleeping. All of these babies were in an unsafe sleep environment–they were sleeping in a bed or on a couch, with an adult or child. Our hearts are still broken for the families who had to endure these tragedies but, we have some hopeful news: the rate of sleep-related infant deaths has slowed down. Still, too many of Baltimore’s babies are dying in their sleep.

The sharpest, most dramatic increase in sleep-related infant deaths occured last winter. That's why we are working as hard as possible now to share our safe sleep messaging with everyone in Baltimore who is pregnant, has a baby, or takes care of a baby. We need your help to save our city's babies' lives.

Here are ways you can help:

Share our printable SLEEP SAFE flyer (left), which features an urgent safe sleep message, with parents and caregivers. The flyer is also available in Spanish

Show our safe sleep videos and keep on the lookout for an updated version coming soon

Order safe sleep rack cards, posters, and DVDs using our online order form

Post messages about safe sleep on social media using #NotOneMoreBaltimore. For sample messages and graphics, you can use our SAFE SLEEP Social Media Kit

Refer families who need a safe place for their baby to sleep to our free portable crib program. To learn more, call HealthCare Access Maryland at 410-649-0500.

Together, we can make sure all of Baltimore's children are born healthy and grow and thrive in healthy families.
