NYC Launches Safe Sleep Campaign with Inspiration from BHB
New York City has launched an infant safe sleep campaign in order to reduce infant deaths due to unsafe sleep envrionments.
When B'more for Healthy Babies (BHB) was launched in 2009, Baltimore City had one of the highest infant mortality rates in the US and preventable sleep-related deaths were a leading contributor. We devoted considerable resources to our SLEEP SAFE initiative, which includes mass media campaigns, community outreach, and education for providers. In 2012 the infant mortality rate (IMR) dropped to its lowest point ever in Baltimore City and with each additional year of implementation, we see more results.
The success of our program has made it a model in the field, and even inspired aspects of NYC's safe sleep program. In the words of Gladys Carrión, NYC's commissioner for the Administration for Children’s Services:
"We learned from Baltimore. When their stats weren't moving, they developed a real community organizing strategy. They hired workers to go into the community and get the message out.”
Congratulations to NYC for their campaign launch and thank you for further validating the hard work of our community programs, partners and stakeholders!
